Bones and Coins Expeditions Guide: Best Way to Use Idle Heroes

Quick answer: Expeditions generate extra coins while you continue progressing. Pick a dungeon room based on the currency you need and send a hero you are not relying on in combat: an assigned hero cannot be in your active party at the same time. Heroes gain unique Expedition bonuses at level 3.

Best Expedition setup

The basic Expedition decision has three parts:

  1. Choose the currency goal. Each dungeon room offers different coin rewards/probabilities.
  2. Choose an off-party hero. An Expedition hero cannot fight in your active party simultaneously.
  3. Use the hero’s Expedition bonus. At level 3, heroes gain unique Expedition bonuses.

That last point is important. “Best Expedition hero” is not one permanent name; it depends on the room, currency target and whether removing that hero weakens your combat party too much.

Early rule of thumb

Send your least important combat hero, not your highest-level hero by default. The passive reward is only good if the active party keeps farming efficiently.

If your Barbarian is carrying early clear speed, keep the Barbarian in the party and send a spare ranged/support hero. Later, when a support hero’s Expedition bonus strongly matches the currency you need, the tradeoff can flip.

Why room selection matters

The Expedition tutorial in early-access footage explicitly says each dungeon room has different coin rewards. That makes Expeditions a targeted income tool rather than generic idle money.

Use them to patch the resource you are short on while actively farming a different objective. For example, the active party can farm an item drop in one room while the Expedition slowly supplies a coin tier from another.

Is Expedition speed worth upgrading?

Speed is useful when Expedition income is a meaningful share of your current target. It is less valuable if the active party earns orders of magnitude more per minute. Compare the reward cadence with your current run income before dumping currency into speed upgrades.

The system is best thought of as parallel progress, not the main engine.

Common mistakes

Sending your strongest active hero. You can accidentally reduce active income more than the Expedition adds.

Leaving the Expedition in an irrelevant room. Change it when your next currency goal changes.

Expecting full idle-game automation immediately. Early player feedback described Bones and Coins as more active/clicker-heavy than a pure idle game; Expeditions are one layer of automation, not the entire loop.

Ignoring level-3 bonuses. Hero level changes the quality of the Expedition assignment.
